To Be A Blessing: The Gift of Giving

This Giving Tuesday, November 28, we harness the power of generosity and service by giving to those in need. Initiated in 2012, Giving Tuesday is now a global movement observed in more than 80 countries around the world. While many nonprofit and charitable organizations hold year-end campaigns to fundraise for disadvantaged and underserved individuals and communities, there are countless ways we can personally give back.

Here are four great ways to support and serve others as we put our Unification faith into practice this holiday season.

Giving to Charities
Is there a cause you are passionate about? You can research organizations focusing on that area and support their work monetarily or in other capacities. You can organize a community drive to provide clothing, food, toys, school supplies, and more. Donating toys at a local drop-off place or food at a local pantry, soup kitchen, or food bank are sure to make a difference during the holidays.

Donating to Shelters

Every act of generosity counts, and everyone has something to give. With homeless shelters facing bigger challenges during the holiday season, donating essentials to people experiencing homelessness is beneficial all around. Here’s an idea of what to pack for the ultimate care box of non-perishable snacks, toiletries, and cold weather necessities.

Volunteering

There are numerous outlets to choose from for volunteering in person or virtually. Offering your time and services can help further the work of nonprofits and charitable groups. They can use financial and legal assistance, web and graphic designers, marketing and public relations experts, and other support. You can check out a volunteer marketplace to connect with a range of local organizations that need help.

Pay It Forward

Consider paying for the next person’s order at the coffee shop, or tipping a little extra on your next restaurant meal. You can check in with an elderly neighbor and get their groceries, or drop off unopened pet food and treats at a local animal rescue. Sending food to frontline workers or shopping locally to support small businesses are all effective ways to spread blessings and holiday cheer.
